The Gate 2005
Shiraz
"There are some leathery, mellow notes to this wine, which really make it nice to drink. Age can help soothe a wine, and while this wine is by no means old, at five years it has certainly started to soften. Blackberries and chocolate, coffee and the aforementioned leather. Tidy stuff."
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh, The Big Red Wine Book 2010/11
" An attractive & lively, slightly left field reflection of the region; medium bodied, with a range of red and black fruits, spice and dark chocolate, and no alcohol impact. Rating 94 To 2015"
Reprinted with permission from James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2009
"The Gate 2005 by Shingleback is a little shiraz masterpiece from a Jimmy Watson winning McLaren Vale producer. Full-bodied with densely packed dark berry fruit, balanced into a mouthful of top grade SA shiraz."
Tony Love, The Advertiser Weekend, January 23 2010
Winemaking
Select parcels of fruit from Shiraz vines grown across the Shingleback vineyard are hand-crafted in small open fermenters to maximize the potential of each unique batch. Maturation for 15 months in 45% new and 55% one year old, fine-grained American and French oak hogsheads softens, enhances and integrates the fruit and structural components of the wine. Individual barrel selection is carried out to create the final blend, which is minimally filtered prior to bottling.
Tasting Note
Deep red. A compote of fragrant strawberries, blackberries and black cherries lift from the glass. The dark, ripe berry aromas and mouthfilling flavours are defined by richly toasted American and French oak. A traditionally powerful Australian Shiraz, with a refined masculinity.
